The SVC men’s track team has set records this year despite a severe lack of athletic infrastructure.
The Review defines “a severe lack of athletic infrastructure” as “not having an actual track on campus.”
Junior Chansler Poole and senior Cameron Stumme both set school records at the Bucknell Bison Open two weeks ago. Poole ran the 1500 in 3:53.50, and Stumme finished the 3000 Steeplechase in 9:39.99. Poole and Stumme joined teammates John Joseph, a junior, and Vince Tonzo, a freshman, in setting a third school record at the same meet, running the 4×800 in an SVC-best 7:52.09.
Junior Nick Killen had nothing but praise for his teammates.
“Chansler is one of the best runners I’ve ever been able to run with,” said Killen. “He’s a leader on the track, and he’s aggressive. His way of motivating everyone else is through his performances.”
SVC can expect our track team’s success to continue for years to come, as the talent is not concentrated amongst upperclassmen. Killen identified Tonzo as one of several talented freshmen on the team. “Tonzo didn’t have much competition in high school,” Killen said. “He was always the best kid on the track. Now he’s really growing up and coming into his own in the Saint Vincent program.”
Most of the student-athletes who run track for SVC also run cross-country in the fall. The SVC men’s cross-country team has won the PAC Championship title for the past three years. Economics professor Dr. Andy Herr coaches both the cross-country and track teams.
Since the Harriers don’t have a track on campus, they have not been able to host meets, but must instead travel to every competition. Despite the inconvenience, the Harriers have maintained a good attitude and produced respectable results.
“’No track, no problem,’ is the way I put it,” said Killen, though he quickly added that having a track on campus “would be really nice.”
The Harriers will head to the PAC Championship meet this weekend at Washington & Jefferson College.
